Ok - Early morning, drinking some joe and thinking poker already.... We are just a few days away from the 2009 final table action at the world series of poker in Las Vegas.  Phil Ivey has all eyes on him.  Can he take a small stack and double up? (He still has a good few orbits in him)  What will be his plan of attack? Will the big stacks keep the pressure up early? The stakes are high and the table is set for some great poker strategy. Darvin Moon - 58,930,000 Darvin Moon?  Will he hold the lead?  Will this loggers life be changed forever? He's a satellite winner with a very good shot at a wsop bracelet.  It's rare for the big stack to stay the big stack but we will see how the card fly.  He seems like a regular dude.. Not sure he's the best for pokers future.. but props to him for a great stack going in.  I place him 3rd Eric Buchman - 34,800,000 From NY - a poker player with some serious cash winnings prior to this event.  He plans on having all his friends to Vegas..  Another large stack.. It will be fun to see if he comes out ready for battle or lays low.. Steven Begleiter - 29,885,000 Winning his seat in the 2009 wsop via a home-game league - this player is one of my picks for the WIN.  It's a great story with him being an amateur who is already saying he's won.  Not the bracelet.. Just by being at the final table in this years event.  He's quoted to have said.. "he's dancing between raindrops..in the middle of a minefield and somehow I'm still standing"   Yes sir.. I'm pulling for this guy to be another Moneymaker.  The other league members will chop 20% of his take.. (not bad.. not bad at all)  Jeff Shulman - 19,580,000 Did you hear about a guy this year saying that if he won a wsop bracelet he'd throw it in the garbage?  Yeppers.. That's this guy.  He's most known as the editor of Card-Player Magazine who has lots to say about a lot of things.  (I have to say - I think SPADE-CLUB is trash.. just my thoughts Jeff)  I do agree that Harrahs has managed some parts of the series poorly. Jeff pretty much thinks he a favorite... It will make for exciting TV watching him work his angles at the felt.  I put him in 6th place.  Figuring people will attack him. Joseph Cada - 13,215,000 The youngest player in this years event will be this man.. Joseph Cada.  He's a poker player with some really good winnings from on-line poker Full Tilt Poker Homepage - He took a break enjoying the Michigan summer and plans on doing the best with the cards he's dealt.  He seems like he has a good head on his shoulders..  I'll be pulling for this guy too.  I give him spot 5  Kevin Schaffel - 12,390,000 51 year old - Father of 2 with his second deep run at the main event. He has 168K in tourney winnings to date - so this cash will be his biggest pay day ever no matter what finish.  He and his son are very excited!  Kevin can't Wait to come back.. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be.. he said. Phil Ivey- 9,765,000 You know - YOU just KNOW!.. Phil has some plans on how he's going to climb the chip ladder this November..  He's a machine with way too many years experience.  The question is - will the cards fly right for this legend of poker. How will the others play him?  I can't see them not keeping him on the hot coals.. He's flying around in private jets (not sure I believe all this... hmmm  Might just be good media hype for all the teenagers) and living the high-life. He's a poker legend with many years to come.  If he pulls this feat off - it will be one hell of a short stack comeback and only seal the deal as to WHO the best player is in all of poker.  (Sorry to my pal Phil Hellmuth) I hate to be a spoiler - but I put him on being out 7 or 8. No way these players are going to roll over for a guy who already has 2 bracelets in 2009.  I predict - many players will push HIM around.  For the sake of a good show.. I'd love to be wrong. Good luck to Mr. Ivey.. He deserves much respect but he's one big bulls-eye. Antoine Saout - 9,500,000 Antoine is from France.. Nobody likes the french... so I don't see this player doing much.  ONLY KIDDING. (lol)  He's another satellite winner (Everest poker) His mother was not liking that he decided to play poker for a living.. he's hoping this years final table showing will change her thinking. Go France.  I'll put him 4th or so..  (Someone has to be the lucky short stack) James Akenhead - 6,800,000 Talk about a small stack... This Londoner is no BIG BEN at this years event.  He's a member of  an England  based poker club called the "HIT SQUAD" so you know he's taking poker serious.  He was a runner up in one of last years $1500 tourneys too..  So close!  They say you have to lose one first right?  He's looking to double up quick and make it happen.  I'd give this player a nod if he gets lucky early - Top 5/6 for sure. Too much to do..

I just can't seem to get to this blog during the warmer weather months..

I want to get to it.. but so many distractions.. I have idea's and thoughts on poker all day and night.

I have a party to put together (with tourney) for a friend that won his seat in this years wsop.

T-ball.. work, house, rentals, truck and other random acts have me feeling swamped... By the time I even get to try and play poker online - I'm bushed and can't wrap my head around it all..

I have images to get up from last week - (working on that now)

Well - it's not a biggie. Summer traffic is down bigtime - always is.. But for the few that read this blog. At least you know.

Already in the works - a PARTY/REUNION of a major poker game - It ran for years and was a HOT HOT game.

I expect - this time around it might be a NL game.

So - working on a list - BBQ, and party details! This one is going to be grand.

Also - this in the works. I return to my home away from home - LAS VEGAS! I would not miss this trip ever. Swine flu and all!

CONGRATS to my close and "long time playing" poker pal chunky for winning his 10,500.00 seat tonight. (May 11, 2009) He locked it up with points TONIGHT, two weeks shy of the 40 week deal.

He played 10 guys in a HOMETOWN league game for 40 weeks @ $60 a week - and took down the prize.

$35 went to till every week.
$25 for 1st and 2nd.

Totals worked out in end like this..

$14,000.00

$10,500.00 for WSOP seat
$ 3,500 for AIRFARE, Hotel and spending money.

The best part about his win (for me) is he came up to visit me at the Elks bar and said nice things about how I was the guy that showed him the game - the game that might change his life (has already actually...lol) forever. Chunky and I have done countless trips to Atlantic City and Vegas and I even coached him to his first major online win (via a cell phone from wal-mart) for a $1600.00 win...- Since then - Chunky has found other coaches as well.. and I now go to him for advice. Bottome line. We love each other and we love the silly game of poker! (Poker is the Devil - right chunk?)

We also played in a pretty major home game coined "the Taj "O" Tom's garage" (yep - that's me) that I ran for years (1/2 and 1/3 pot limit) We played with some very talented local players... and you could not help but learn playing with our group. (You learned or you went broke) It was a barn burner game that went on for 24 hours at times a few times a week. For years. It shut down due to the pots getting over 2000.00 - To rich for most players playing. - To rich for me to run without major WORRY for players.

SO CONGRATS TO OUR CHUNKY!!!!

Good Luck Chunk! I hope you win it all!!! You have come a long way since losing $400.00 in one night playing in my 2/4 limit poker game..

Chunk will now play for the 10 players that joined the league... (Each member owning 10% of chunky)

WSOP - 2009

I wake up today (on my birthday) and all I got in my mind is winning a seat in the 2009 WSOP. I was not even looking to GO in 2009, rather my target has been 2010.

How cool!

The problem is.. I have little info on doing such a task via games online. I'm not one for trolling the boards looking for the best satellites games to play. Someone out there MUST have already done all the homework for me.. Right?

If you know of great satellites out there for me to give this years WSOP a crack.. Please hit me up with a comment here. I'm not looking to get into the MAIN event.. Any old WSOP NL or POT LIMIT event will work.

$1500 - or so buy in..

My pal Chunky is close to winning his 10,000.00 seat and My gal friend is going out to DEAL the big games.. so now I have the BUG to go out there and get into SOME POKER ACTION.. I want to play some cards!!

Time for me to start making my RUN at the BIGTIME!

Friend - 4 games out from 10,000.00 entry into 2009 wsop

A friend of mine named - "Chunky" is just 5 games out of winning a seat in this years WSOP. He is 19 pts. in front and might be able to lock it up in 3 or 4 games.

He has come a long way since we met... He was the losingest player at my 2/4 limit game just 5 years ago. HE started playing TEXAS HOLDEM in the game ai ran for years and get this.. He started "1" week before my little girl was born. When he came back on his 2nd wek of playing -My wife and I were at the hospital and someone else ran the action! (Chunky remembers this!) I for some reason do not. Maybe due to the whole hospital thing and the fact that I had a load of players coming and going.

What else..

My girlfriend Jerri just received word she will be dealing in this years WSOP. She is pumped as well... and plans on being in Vegas from Mid May to the series end.. Jerri dealt games in Vegas for a good couple years (Wynn) but had to return home when her father got really ill. Until this trip.. She has been home - taking care of her mom.

Due to this great news - I might have to get out to Vegas a year early - due to having a place to crash... ESPECIALLY IF CHUNKY GETS IN THE BIG GAME.

Jerri lets me take over a spare bedroom from time to time and in return - I show her how to have a good time going to shows, great meals and having a few drinks!

Daniel Negreanu - TAKING A LITTLE REST FROM POKER

I just ripped thru Daniel Negreanu's blog.. Seems he's making some changes for 2009. Slowing down. Being more selfish.. He wants to play more golf and he is going to slow down with giving away all his TIME and poker secrets..

He plans on making the WSOP his number one PUSH in 2009.

I wish him well...

I feel sorta the same as Daniel - except to a much smaller degree. (and I'm not talking poker) I need to slow down.

- No - I have it wrong..

I need to slow down... AFTER I speed up - I have a few more major projects to complete and then - I'm taking it a lot more easy.. Over the past 3 years - I've done major projects on my 100 year old home(s) - to make it modern and more like.. ME. (I added a little VEGAS lighting) I did so with every extra dollar (many thousands) and even some of my poker bank roll.. (OMG!)

Odd.. I expect when my life projects are done (and I know they will never totally be DONE) - I'll be playing more poker. The MAJOR stuff is behind me! (THANK GOD!)

I often Wonder if I'll ever get to a point where I'm looking for yet another rest from the felt.. (I have had this happen in the past..) I get where DANIEL is coming from.. needing to SCALE back.. (I'm sure his hours involved with poker CRUSHES mine - and I've played a load of poker..)

For right now - I'm tired of WORKING the regular work.. (too much work - DIRTY work - for too long - WEARS YOU DOWN) Funny how one man looks to LEAVE poker behind a little and another - is looking to GET back into it all HARD CORE.. (me) I guess this is why the game will go on FOREVER!

God help me to get to a point like the TV poker players - I'd love to wake up and worry about playing "more" GOLF.. or Getting my POOL game better... (I hate golf)

I think many - but I'm sure not ALL of the TV poker PROS - are sitting SO good that they don't have to worry much about house projects - like a leaky roof.. I do havre these worries - and I'll bet many reading this here blog do as well..

How nice for them..

For us - It's just a dream to "just play poker" for the fun of it.. Most of the ROUNDERS are playing to Pay rent - OR at least to have a vacation - etc.. (One vacation) or to buy a few EXTRA nice toys in life - In short - To many of us POKER is a hobby that PAYS.. sometimes.

Other times - POKER IS THE DEVIL.

Blah blah blah...

The point I'm trying to make is this.. Many of us REGULAR POKER JOES (Hey! - Do a search today for POKER JOES!) Many of us POKER JOES will never sit in a game and be able to experience what it's like to PLAY without the WORRY of losing "THE BUY IN".. With us - We have 1 or two buy ins... and then it's BACK TO THE EXPRESSWAY - HOME.. DREAMING of the NEXT TRIP.

It must be cool for Daniel - to be able to - well - be Daniel.

I'm not HATING on Daniel either.. He's got a good thing going and I'm happy for him.. He's great for poker and just a good guy. It's just - I'd like to PLAY at the level they play - and do it without sweating the buy ins...

lol

Then again.. I wanted to play in the ROCK GROUPS AC/DC and KISS when I was a child and Huh.. it never happened..

Of course.. like all the rounders out there - I watched.. (I think it MISSED something.. something was missing.. can't put my finger on it..) I'll get back to you on this..

I'll follow this subject and learn more about the new crowned king of poker. Maybe he's more a prince (being only 22) either way - I expect he will have NO problem getting a date for the next million years or so...

I watched the table.. I think ONLY "3" of them had game.. (few others had some basic talent and just held on for the next JUMP in cash, not that I blame them) and... others got there on the LUCK TRAIN and were like FISH out of water.

NO BIG NAMES... No Phil Hellmuth, no Jesus, no NOBODY... huh? Kinda supports my idea that WE ARE ALL LIKE SPAWNING SALMON when playing in poker tourneys... Skill is a factor - but LUCK plays it's role.

I think it will be good for poker overall, the young man beat Phil Hellmuth's record... He played with skills.. He's easy on the eyes.. and he was pretty cool about the whole WIN.. (and NO sunglasses) Let's face it - there are millions of young guys and gals that are not thinking hey.."I can do THATTTTT!" (I know I said it... I'm still saying it... lol)

It's all going to depend on weather or not Peter Eastgate wants to DO THE TOUR and help BUILD poker... (I hope he will) I can't even THINK of what it must be like AFTER you win that tourney. Globs of people wanting a piece of the WINNER.

It's WSOP time and I'm sitting here in SUNNY and WARM Pennsylvaina - At least I have my FullTilt.




The image here is from the game I won onFULLTILTPOKER late last week. In this hand I tried to slow play after the flop(don't ask me why? You can't slow play EVER and win a hand on FT) - Yes - I did raise PRE FLOP and got a few to many callers in my opinion - but this always happens in these games..

Anyways - the River card came and guess what BOTH these two players were holding?





You guessed it! K. Yeppers! - They always have IT - No matter what "IT" is..

K? what you ask?

Turned out the guy late pos had an OK "K" (strong) but the one in early pos had a K with crap.. "3" I think... something lame like that.

Me? what did I do with my "still LOOKING like a pretty good hand on the river"(three Q's) I folded of course - it's the easy and smart move.

Hands like this make me say that ONLINE hands are contrived... and anything but random... MANY SAY I'M WRONG... Plain and simple. We have to agree to disagree.


In this next shot - I'm in the small blind and call a small raise.. The player has position on me but for some reason... bets super small amounts - like 200-300 so I just keep calling - On river.... same player makes a bit larger bet and something told me I had him - Some people LIVE and DIE by the hand "AK" - "AQ"























Don't be afraid to get some money in there... GET PAID if they did not hit draw or hold a weak A...

And here is the shot of the LAST hand from that $10 game. - Wish I had the betting info for you - but lets just say - this guy thought he was ALL THAT on the turn... but we HAD HIM already... Sucks to be him on this hand...

I forgot to mention that I had to finish this game from the parking lot of our Elks lodge (car) since the bar shut down early - I stuck around to keep the SIGNAL for Internet... It was my first ever win while sitting in my car at 1:30 am.

Yesterday it started - WSOP 2008

Well.. Another year (2008 WSOP) that I'm not going to be in Las Vegas.. You know what? That's ok with me! At least FULLTILTPOKER has the mini series for me to deal with... I have this action to look forward to and that's enough... You see.. living here in POKER DEPRIVED PENNSYLVANIA it's tough. It was like only yesterday (it seems to me) when I was there in Vegas ALL THE TIME with an average stay of 15 days.. Ahhhhh - The good old days... when GAS was cheap and flights out west were 200-300 tops.

I love Las Vegas but having a 4 year old little girl and family means much more to me .. Until she is in SCHOOL - all day. I'm staying home with the family. That, and as many of you know - I made a deal with my wife that we would PAY OFF THE HOUSE before I play in any major buy in games. This might happen NEXT year - maybe. 2010 is a LOCK if I'm still on this earth.

NOW - FOCUS HERE! GOOD STUFF COMING AT YOU IN THESE NEXT FEW LINES.. If you are looking to get a good day in day out play by play of the 2008 series.. Me - I'm not sad not being there - I been there done that.. (never won! Hell - never entered a major game) I covered a few series between 1994-1999 and the 2002 - 2004 and 2005. The crowds - the sounds.. I was in the heart of it all - it was awesome! But not this year.. not at this time..

I'll do what I have been doing the last few years - reading DR. PAULY and waiting for ANY poker NUGGETS on the boob tube.

Yeppers! If you are in Vegas in the next month or so - the place to be (for POKER) is at the RIO! It's an ALL SUITE hotel (I have stayed at this property many times!) I give it a 5 STAR rating... EXCEPT for it being SO DARN BIG.. Walking to the pool and back from your room can be a task... But, who the hell is going to the pool right? With all that POKER ACTION... I doubt many rounders will know if it's day or night..

So follow my advice and TAG - Dr. PAULY'S site and check in with him every day for the REAL nuggets of poker news. then come play with me in the mini series.. on FULLTILTPOKER

I have some posts coming in the near future about a young lady that is going to play in the MAIN EVENT (SHE won her seat) and I ended up buying 5% of her action and raising another $500 for he - through donations and plan on giving that % to our local Elks Lodge. Elks care, Elks share.
